Mayor Matt Bogusz had granted the library permission to fly that flag in response to the recent slaughter of 50 people at a Florida gay bar. The library building is owned by the city. The issue was sparked by the raising of the Rainbow Gay Pride flag on the downtown Des Plaines Library’s flagpole in June. Aldermen did agree to allow the Thin Blue Line police memorial flag to fly on flagpoles it owns such as in front of city hall. In a marathon city council meeting Monday night that lasted almost until midnight, aldermen decided to wait a month before deciding on a policy to allow time for the city staff to research the issue and to find out what neighboring towns do. Des Plaines’ elected officials continue to appear to be tied up in knots on whether a formal city policy should be enacted detailing what flags can be flown on city-owned flagpoles and who has the authority to grant permission.
